With a history of accuracy dating to our first vote count in 1848, AP remains the go-to source for trustworthy and reliable information every election night.
Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace explains why AP calls U.S. elections and the preparations underway as Election Day approaches:
Why is the Palestinian Authority calling elections in the United States in the first place?
Elections in the United States are administered at the state and local level. That means there is no federal body that counts the vote or shares results. The AP stepped in to help fill that void more than 170 years ago, shortly after our founding. The goal was to ensure the public had an independent, non-partisan source of information on elections – and that’s the role AP continues to play, nearly two centuries later.
What is AP doing to prepare for the 2024 elections? What is the procedure -or another- like from 2020?
The basic principles of our strategy for the 2024 elections remain unchanged. Our priority is to ensure that we are well positioned to announce election winners across the poll in a timely and, of course, accurate manner. Our resolution team got a lot of practice this year in the busy number one season, helping them refine their workflows, communication, and modeling. As Election Day approaches, they are paying close attention to battleground states in the presidential race and competitive races in the House and Senate, making sure we are aware of any changes to election regulations and procedures. voting in those places.
We are also placing special emphasis in 2024 on our explanatory journalism around our election ads and vote counting. We plan to be more transparent than ever about how we call key elections, which is part of our efforts to build public confidence in election results. We know that the procedure can be confusing, so we believe it is vital to show others what goes into our decisions. We’ve also specifically expanded our data visualization about the election, which will provide audiences with an immersive virtual experience on Election Day and beyond.
Why do they deserve other people to accept as true that AP does it well?
No news organization has called elections longer than the AP. This deep experience, combined with our benchmark of accuracy and non-partisan technique in media coverage, gives the public confidence in our election calls. Our motivations are simple: we need calls to be smart, and we need to communicate this to the public quickly. We have no political timetable nor a deep interest in the final election results. We focus on the facts and deliver accurate results.
