Volvo reveals its first electric car: XC40 Replenished SUV makes debut

Volvo revealed its first electric car on Wednesday as the car brand moves forward with its plan to convert the entire lineup into electric or hybrid cars.

The Swedish brand, owned by Chinese automaker Geely, debuted the Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV.

If this looks familiar, it’s because it’s essentially a battery-powered version of the standard XC40. Another difference is a brand new infotainment system using Google’s Android operating system.

The price will start at less than $ 48,000 after the $ 7,500 Federal tax credit, Volvo said. The car will be available for pre-order later this year, but won’t be delivered to customers until the fourth quarter of 2020.

The automaker plans to produce a battery-powered car every year for the next five years. The company hopes to move from sales of up to 50% electric cars and 50% hybrids by 2025.

Pure electric or plug-in hybrid cars will be sold under the Recharge brand option. The company said it would also provide plug-in hybrid user returns for the average cost of electricity for the first year of ownership.

“We have said this several times: for Volvo Cars, the future will be electric,” said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. Today, we are taking an important new step in this direction with the launch of our all-electric XC40 and Recharge car line.”..

The Volvo XC40 Recharge will get more than 248 miles on a single charge, although that figure is based on European regulatory standards. According to US data, it will probably be closer to 200.

Volvo said its goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its cars by 40% from 2018 to 2025.
