USA Swimming announces Knoxville as the site’s first TYR Pro Swim series in January

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series will begin on new year’s day January 9-12 in Knoxville, Tenn., USA Swimming announced today. The four-day meeting will take place at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate aquatic center on the campus of the University of Tennessee, marking the first time Knoxville has hosted a TYR Pro Swim series event.

The 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series marked the first time U.S. Swimming selected its events through a request for proposal and bidding process. The highly competitive process has yielded many submissions from communities across the country. Together with USA Swimming, the local organizing Committee (LOC) will play a vital role in the planning, public relations, local sponsorships, ticket sales and marketing of the event.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the kickoff event for the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series,” said Chad CULVER, senior Director of the Knoxville sports Commission.  “This is a huge victory for Knoxville and our entire swimming community. Allan Jones Intercollegiate aquatic centre is a world class facility that will be a great host for this event .”

The TYR Pro Swim series is a 3.5-day event consisting of six stops across the country from January to November. The meeting, which traditionally takes place from Wednesday afternoon to Saturday, is televised on NBC Sports Network, the Olympic channel, as well as live on usaswimming.org the Five remaining stops will be announced in the coming weeks.

Historically, each stop has attracted between 400 and 600 of the world’s best swimmers, including, U.S. members of the national swimming team, members of the Junior national team, and the world’s top 50 swimmers. Most recently, in 2018, Olympian Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./ Stanford Swimming/NCAP) broke the world record (15:20.48) in the 1500 m freestyle at the TYR Pro Swim line.

Knoxville has hosted a number of high-profile sporting events including the USA Cycling Pro Road

Tickets for individual stops of the TYR Pro Swim series will go on sale at the end of 2018.
