UPDATE: Unstable embankment threatens mobile homes on Signal Mountain Road

UPDATE: With all the rainfall over the past few days, firefighters are worried about an unstable embankment behind a mobile home park on Signal Mountain Road.

Crews were out marking dangerous trees on Thursday that need to be cut down before residents can return home.

This all happening right across the street from where a Subway restaurant was destroyed in a mudslide in February 2019.

Residents are concerned that their homes could be crushed by a falling tree. Some say they have been worried for a while now but never to this degree.

“We don’t want this mudslide to ruin all of our trailers and have nowhere to go,” said resident Kara Kurkendall.

Kara Kurkendall lives in Edmonds Properties Mobile Home Court on Signal Mountain Road.

“I got back home, power was out and of course, my landlord texted me and was like, you know, don’t know when the electricity is going to be back on but they’re here,” Kara Kurkendall said. “But they’re talking about condemning the houses.”

EPB came to restore power Thursday morning and crews became concerned about an unstable embankment behind several trailers.

They called the Chattanooga Fire Department, which in turn requested that the city’s land development officials inspect the hill.

The townspeople feared that they would lose their homes.

Curkendall had problems, but this is the worst thing to happen.

“We’ve had rainfall like this before, but it’s never actually done anything,” she said.

Chief of special operations with the fire department tells Channel 3 officials are taking this seriously.

“One of the things they’re having to do is come back and take some trees off the side of the hill to try and take some of the pressure off the side of the hill,” said Chief Hague.

Crews marked five trees that were the most concerning and needed to be removed before residents could go back in their homes.

The property owner didn’t want to stop there though.

“The mobile home facility is going above what is being asked to do for them; they’re going to remove several trees off the side of the ridge where they are leaning toward the residences,” Chief Hague said.

Power has been restored to the park and we still haven’t heard if residents are living there on Thursday night.

In the meantime, the Chief Hague believes they caught the mudslide in time and are taking the necessary precautions to prevent anything else dangerous.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Special Operations Division is monitoring an “unstable” embankment on Signal Mountain Road after heavy rain caused a mudslide.

EPB crews were called to Edmonds Properties Thursday morning to restore power to residents in the mobile home park. That crew noted problematic areas on the ridge behind the park and contacted the fire department.

“They found an unstable embankment behind several of the trailers and notified CFD,” said CFD Spokesperson, Lindsey Rogers. “There has been a small mudslide.”

Representatives with the Chattanooga Land Development Office are also on scene to take a look at the problematic areas and discussions are underway about efforts to remove trees and debris from the site.

“Officials are worried about the possibility of trees falling onto the trailers,” said Rogers. “Safety is a top priority.”

Rogers says it’s unclear at this time what impact this will have on residents.

Mobile home Park is located across the street from the metro which was crushed in a landslide in February last year.

Channel 3 has a crew on the scene. Look for live coverage beginning on air at 4 p.m.
