The word of UFCs ‘ biggest star isn’t enough to sway President Dana white’s promotion.
White on Thursday said he would not comply with Conor McGregor’s recent order to fight Frankie Edgar, arguing the former lightweight champion did not deserve the opportunity.
Not only that, white told the Boston Herald, but Edgars ‘ recent decision to move to the lightweight division ruled him out.
That Frankie Edgar wouldn’t be there, white said. Frankie is two weight classes below him. (Edgar) is in position; he had to fight Aljamain sterling and Aljamain fell out and got injured.
Frankies is coming to the end of his career and he could end up getting himself in the title position again. So taking Conor’s fight doesn’t make sense.
McGregor, whose return to the UFC in July was delayed by a broken arm, popped on Twitter on Wednesday to issue his latest fight proclamation. He shouted at white to make the fight in response to an exchange with Edgar, who told his fellow ex-champion head had already agreed to take the fight.
Edgar signaled his move to 135 pounds after a heartbreaking setback against Featherweight Max Holloway in his latest attempt to capture UFC gold. He was indeed scheduled to take on sterling at UFC 244 next month, but a wrist injury to Funkmaster ruled out the possibility.
It was not the first time McGregor’s demands had been rejected by Whites. But the UFC President said the star would still return to the octagon.
I think Conor will fight next year, ” white said.
