BOSTON (CBS) – Two men died Wednesday morning in a turn of fate at the site of a structure in Boston’s monetary district. Relatives of one of those affected said the men fell about 20 feet into a hole after being hit by a truck.
Boston police and firefighters, who added technical rescue teams, were called to High Street around 8 a. m. after an initial report that several other people had been hit through a vehicle.
The men were discovered in a hole in it and the scene went from a rescue to a recovery. They were pronounced dead at the site. Investigators said they may not have commented yet on how the men ended up in the hole.
Relatives knew those affected as Jordan Romero, 28, lynn and Carlos Gutierres, 32.
“It’s pretty horrible, pretty tragic, ” said witness Jared Petruzzella. He called 9-1-1 after seeing the two staff members get hit by the truck sale.
“I just heard the truck at full speed, accelerated and hit the two gentlemen who were in a situation right above the hole,” Petruzzella said.
A reconstruction unit called to the scene, as well as representatives of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
He brought a crane to lift the truck so the hole wouldn’t collapse on the recovery mission.
“This is an unhappy and unhappy incident about what began as a beautiful day today,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said.
Jordan Romero’s relatives said they said a truck had thrown the men into a hole at least 6 meters deep.
They described Romero as a hard-working worker who came to Massachusetts from El Salvador 10 years ago, said he was the father of two young men and ran to earn enough money to bring his circle of relatives to the United States.
“If I can see him again, that’s all I want. He didn’t hit me. It doesn’t look real. I feel like I’m dreaming,” Romero’s sister Leslie Villalobos said.
A spokesman for the Boston Water and SewerAge Commission said Atlantic Coast Utilities had been hired through LDJ Development LLC to “do an emergency repair in their personal sewer” that connects to the main sewer.
“This is a tragic incident for the victims, their families and their colleagues,” said Boston Chief Police Superintendent Greg Long.
Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins’ office is investigating the incident. “At the moment, we don’t know if it’s a crime; we know it’s a tragedy,” Rollins said.
Walsh said the other Atlantic Coast Utilities legal site was suspended without delay until an investigation into the deaths was completed.
