Tumblr, an online blogging site owned by Verizon since Yahoo’s acquisition in July 2016, will ban adult content from December 17, 2018.

The site, founded in 2007, is making the move about three weeks after its app was removed from Apple’s App Store after some child sexual abuse material appeared on Tumblr.

Although the site works with groups including the national center for missing and exploited children to verify uploaded material, some material made it to the site. After it was spotted, “we immediately removed this content,” Tumblr said in an update posted on its website. “Content protection is a complex aspect of operating large-scale platforms. We are constantly evaluating the next steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team .”.

Now, Tumblr says it will move to ban all adult content as of December 17, including photos of genitals, as well as photos, videos, illustrations and gifs of sexual acts.

“We have spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in a community that includes adult content,” Tumblr CEO Jeff D’onofrio wrote in a post on the site. “In doing so, it became clear that without this content, we have the opportunity to create a place where more people will feel comfortable expressing themselves.”

Tumblr’s ability to offer “a mixture of images representing all vital interests” made it unique, another Twitter poster said. Now, “it’s not going to fulfill an important part of life,” he continued.

Tumblr “was the last place on the Internet that wasn’t restrictive,” said another. “A very sad loss for the Internet.”

It’s the second major development to cancel adult content in a matter of days. Starbucks on Thursday said that starting in 2019, it will have new filters in place to prevent customers using it in-store Wi-Fi from accessing explicit content.

Yahoo acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013, and the deal proved to be a scourge for CEO Marissa Mayer, as Yahoo took a pair of charges to write down nearly half of its value.

But the site remains active with 449.2 million blogs and, according to its statistics, there were more than 32.4 million posts on Monday.
