WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald trump on Friday said he believed a trade agreement between the United States and China would be signed by the time the Asia-Pacific economic cooperation meetings are held in Chile on November 16 and 17.
Chinese Vice Premier Liu he will give Beijing a perspective on the progress of the talks in a speech on Saturday, according to a tweet http://bit.ly/2J5hgRN from the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, the tabloid is published by the Chinese people’s daily ruling Communist party.
“I think it will be signed quite easily, hopefully at the summit in Chile, where President XI and I will both be,” trump told reporters at the White house, without elaborating.
“We are working very well with China,” trump said.
The white house announced that China has agreed to buy up to $ 50 billion of U.S. agricultural products annually, as part of the first phase of the trade deal, although China seems slow to follow through.
The so-called phase 1 deal was unveiled at the White house last week during a visit by Deputy Prime Minister He as part of an attempt to end the tit-for-tat trade war between Beijing and Washington that has angered markets and hammered global growth. U.S. officials said the second phase of negotiations could address more complex issues such as forced technology transfers and non-financial issues related to non-financial services.
