WASHINGTON-Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a bipartisan Turkey sanctions bill Thursday that would go far beyond the economic sanctions President Donald trump imposed – widening the rift between the two Republicans over trump’s controversial decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.
“Mr. President, as much as I love you and want to work with you, I will be consistent, and I will hold you accountable,” Graham said at a news conference unveiling the bill.
He spoke shortly before Vice President Mike Pence announced from Turkey that the two governments had agreed to a five-day pause in military operations in Syria.
In a replacement, Pence said, the trump administration agreed not to impose additional sanctions on Turkey. And as soon as you establish a permanent cease-fire, the United States will cancel the sanctions that the judge imposed on Turkey on Monday.
Graham welcomed the temporary cease-fire but warned it was just the first step in what was to come. He said he would continue to seek support for his proposal in the Senate.
Legislation that Graham introduced with Sen. Chris van HOLLEN (D-Md.), will target the personal finances of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the sanctions of the Turkish armed forces, among other organizations.
“This measure strikes the guts of the Turkey,” said van HOLLEN.
Graham said sanctions are necessary not only to fix the situation in Syria, but because China, Russia and Iran are also watching and must be told they cannot act with impunity.
Graham was one of the first to condemn trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, which he said gave Turkey the green light to attack Kurdish forces that were helping the U.S. fight Islamic state, also called ISIS. Graham called the move a “stain on America’s honor” and said it was the” biggest mistake ” of trump’s presidency.
On Wednesday, after trump disparaged the Kurds as “no angels” and said the Turkish-Syrian conflict “is not our problem,” Graham unleashed a new salvo on the President.
Trump “will have American blood on his hands if he renounces the Kurds because ISIS will come back, and if any American is killed anywhere because of the resurgent ISIS, he will fall for the trump administration, as did (former President Barack) Obama,” Graham said.
Asked about Graham’s comments, trump hit back.
“Lindsey Graham would like to stay in the middle East for the next 1,000 years,” trump said at a White house news conference.
“Wow. We deliberately bombed our own base, because of the impulsive decision of @realDonaldTrump did not leave time to evacuate in the right direction. Is this the America you believed in? Kingsinger tweeted.
The trump administration on Monday announced new U.S. sanctions against several Turkish defense, interior and energy Ministers, as well as two departments of the country. Trump also said he would raise steel tariffs in Turkey to 50% from 25%.
Critics in Congress say the sanctions are a grossly inadequate response to Turkey’s decision to invade Syria. The speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., derided trump’s sanctions as ” wet noodles.”
Graham-van HOLLEN sanctions bill number one introduced last week by the Chairman of the House foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Eliot Engel of new York, and his GOP counterpart, Rep. Michael Mccaul of Texas.
The House measure would block U.S. arms sales to Turkey, ban senior Turkish officials from entering the U.S. and impose sanctions on Turkish financial institutions that facilitate deals for the country’s military and defense industries.
“What am I calling for? Just listen to the commanders. Don’t listen to Rand Paul. Don’t listen to me. We go to play Golf, and we’re going to talk about the Golf course, ” Graham said Thursday before the ceasefire was announced. “If you don’t think I don’t know what I’m saying, that I’m a warmonger and want to stay forever, just write me off. All I ask is that you do what President Obama did not: listen and adjust .”
