Three Britons accused of beating Ontario restaurant owner

Three men from the United Kingdom have been charged in connection with the death of Curry House Sharif Rahman in Owen Sound, Ontario, who died following an attack in 2023.

Rahman died after chasing three men out of his restaurant over an unpaid bill.

On Wednesday, police said 24-year-old Robert Evans had been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident.

They also said Robert Busby Evans, 47, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence while 54-year-old Barry Evans was arrested on Oct. 29 and charged with accessory after the fact to commit indictable offence.

The three men are awaiting extradition in the United Kingdom, according to the OPP.

OPP Det. Insp. Jane Conway would not specify where the men were from when speaking to reporters on Wednesday but did thank police in Scotland for their efforts.

“Although it is too early to give a timetable for extradition, we are pleased to announce that the defendants have been arrested,” he said.

Conway would also not provide information on how the men were related  to one another and said that it might compromise extradition efforts.

When asked why they were in Canada, Conway only responded: “The 3 Americans are citizens of the United Kingdom and were here in Canada. ” »

It has been 17 months since Rahman died following a brutal attack in the small Ontario town on the shores of Georgian Bay.

The restaurateur was left in a coma after being beaten in the small net of a cove in Georgian Bay, about 3 hours north of Toronto.

He died about a week later, when Owen Sound police asked the Ontario Provincial Police for help.

“Shortly thereafter, police learned that the three suspects had fled the country, which led to collaborating with partners to coordinate their arrests abroad,” Conway said.

Rahman’s death hit the small Ontario community hard and there was an outpouring of support for his family.

Mayor Ian Boddy stated shortly after that attack Sharif was an “exceptional member of our community, who dedicated his time to City and County Committees, as well as a successful entrepreneur, and a devoted family man.”

“His passing is a tragic loss for our network, and this is the time to reach out in combination with compassion and support. Let us all reflect on Sharif’s kindness and love for the network in treating everyone with the same generosity that he embodied,” the mayor added.

On Wednesday, Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose said Rahman’s killing “has shaken the very fabric of our city and beyond. “

“Sharif is known by many for his generosity, his involvement in networking and his local restaurant, the Curry House,” Ambrose said.
