The upper house of Japan has approved us-Japan agreement on trade Ag

Today, the national potato Council (NPC) welcomed the adoption by the upper house of Japan’s Parliament Japan-us agreement on agricultural trade. Before the official statement of the ministries of trade of both countries, the Pact will be adopted on 1 January.

“As the largest export market for potatoes, the U.S., Japan is of vital importance for the future health and prosperity of potato producers of America and industry partners,” says Kam Quarles, Director General of the National Council of potatoes. “Today’s action restores the reduction of tariffs and bring the potato industry in the United States on an equal footing with our foreign competitors. In the future NPC and our internal partners will continue to work on expanding access to vital Japanese market for high quality potato exports from the United States.”

“Today’s actions reinforce the trade benefits previously negotiated in the framework of the Agreement on the TRANS-Pacific partnership, and the potato industry in the United States appreciates the work of Ambassador Leithauser, Secretary of state, Purdue, and groups in the Office of U.S. trade Representative, the Department of agriculture and inspection Service of animal health to receive this Covenant at the finish line,” says Jared Balcom, Chairman of the NPC Committee on trade issues and potato producer from Pasco, Washington.

After the full implementation of the agreement, the agreement will reduce and ultimately remove tariffs on frozen and khlopchatobumazhnoe potatoes in the United States. Japan is the largest export market of the potato industry of the United States with exports totaling more than $350 million last year. Given the competitive tariff regime and reasonable agreement on market access, it is believed that this market could grow by another $150 million a year (42 percent) in the very near future.
