Senate attempts to block a state of emergency declared by President Donald trump along the southern border stalled again on Thursday.
While most lawmakers had previously voted for a resolution to end the state of emergency, which trump used to shift funding from other military construction projects to his border wall, not enough ultimately to override a veto by the President.
Instead, senators voted 36-53 to support trump’s veto, an expected result. At least 20 Republicans would have to work with Democrats in order to hit the 67 supermajority members needed to override the veto.

Congress can vote on a state of emergency every six months, under the 1976 national emergency Law, and Democrats have been keen to use the rule to put trump and Republican senators in place on the border wall.
The latest vote, in particular, was aimed at pressuring swing-state Republicans like Sens. Tom Tillis (R-NC) and Martha McSally (R-AZ), who are up for re-election in 2020, and whose States are suffering from administrations raiding funds. As Voxs ‘ Alex ward reported, about half of all 50 States intend to see planned funding shifts. Projects including improving the military Academy at West point and disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico are among those projects expected to lose money.
Eleven Republicans voted with Democrats to block the state of emergency in the country last month. They are Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Rand Paul (R-KY), MITT Romney (R-UT), Mike Lee (R-UT), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Rob Portman (R-OH), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Roy blunt (R-MO), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
Many of the same lawmakers also voted to override the veto. But some people will have to break up with trump, if lawmakers really want to put an end to the emergency situation in the country.
