The Los Angeles Rams took the risk of trading Marcus Peters and then landed Jalen Ramsey as a reward

Les Snead took a few gambles Tuesday.

One deals with two first-round draft picks and a fourth-round pick for Jalen Ramsey, a 24-year-old stopping cornerback who made public his desire for a long-term contract in Jacksonville by showing up to training camp in an armored truck.

But first, the Los Angeles Rams General Manager sorted out starting cornerback Marcus Peters, thereby opening the lid room for Ramsey, with no guarantee that he would be able to get Ramsey’s job done.

“You have to discuss Marcus Peters without insurance Jalen,” Snead said Wednesday afternoon at the Rams football headquarters at Cal Lutheran University.

“It had to be done, it’s the only way to do it because there’s no certainty.”

Snead said he approached potential scenarios with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, as well as cornerbacks coach Aubrey Pleasant and safeties coach Ejiro Evero.

“You had to talk through the game until the end of the season, playing Julio Jones and (Calvin) Ridley without Marcus and who we have if it couldn’t happen,” Snead said, “because nothing is certain.”

Rams look they will have Ramsey partnered with Troy hill as starting cornerbacks on Sunday in Atlanta.

“That’s the goal,” said head coach Sean McVay, who added second-year cornerback Darius Williams would be a move if Ramsey isn’t ready for his debut.

Safety Mark Christian is also expected to move into the starting lineup with the loss of John Johnson III, who was placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.

Veteran Eric Weddle, signed in the offseason from Baltimore, is the lone member of the starting secondary who remains an active roster member.

“That’s why you have me, perfectly honest,” Weddle said. “I’ve been through this many times … It’s my job to get everyone on the same page and play at a high level. There are no excuses in this League .”

Fifth-year cornerback Troy hill is expected to start as Ramsey’s book corner.

“It’s going to be interesting,” hill said. “It’s a lock down corner, so you should expect to get a lot of action on the other side.”

Hill, who wears No 20 this season after giving up No 32 at Weddle in the off-season, is expected to give his new number to Ramsey. He will switch to the No. 22 he wore as a sophomore at St. Bonaventure (Caliph.) secondary school.

“We’ll work something out if he wants,” hill said.

On his ongoing podcast on SiriusXM’s the app, Ramsey said he was “overjoyed” to be with the Rams.

“I was so blessed to be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, the fifth overall pick, but now I have a new Chapter starting in my life,” Ramsey said. “Going out to Los Angeles, will be part of the Los Angeles Rams.

“Excited to be part of this defense. Coach Wade Phillips. Coach Sean McVeigh. Coach Aubrey Pleasant. I’m excited to get out there and do my thing for the Los Angeles Rams and show them they’ve got the best angle in the entire NFL for years to come.”

Tuesday’s whirlwind day, which included the acquisition of Ramsey after Peters ‘ decision for Baltimore linebacker Kenny young and 2020 fifth-round pick, was charged out of a festering long-term indefinitely at the cornerback position.

“From our corner situation, we had two unrestricted free agents,” Snead said. “Teams have been hooking up with me in corners for a while now.”

The rams entered the season with a pair of starting cornerbacks on expiring contracts.

Peters played on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, worth $ 5.9 million, originally signed in Kansas city after being drafted in the first round of the 2015 draft.

The 33-year-old Aqib Talib, placed on injured reserve Monday with broken ribs, is in the final year of a six-year, $ 57 million contract signed in Denver in 2014.

With Talib lost at least eight weeks, if not the rest of the season, and a trade deadline of two weeks, Snead decided it was time to make a move.

The fifth overall pick of the 2016 draft, Ramsey, an all-Pro pick in 2017, quickly established himself as one of the best defensive playmakers in the NFL.

Snead mentioned Ramsey’s length, speed, agility, quickness and confidence to close out the opposition’s best receiving weapon.

“There’s only a few players like that,” Snead said. “He happens to be one of them. … It was actually fun to study it. You come away very impressed with the way he approaches the pass game and the run, tackle and coverage .”

Ramsey will pay $ 13.7 million on a five-year rookie contract option next season. The rams hope to extend it.

Snead said once the trade deal was agreed with Jacksonville, he was able to talk to Ramsey’s agents to “give our long-term view and get it.”

As with what the Taliban and Peters were previously thrilled about, the Rams are “very comfortable,” Snead said, adding a talented personality like Ramsey to the locker room.

“The first thing I want to know is, do they love football?”Snead asked. “This is the Chapter they are focused on and they love winning?”

Rams quarterback Jared Goff said he was unbothered By Ramsey calling him “average above average” in his famous interview in G magazine last year.

“Due to the fact that he called a lot of people, it wasn’t half bad,” Goff said. “It’s part of Jalen’s attitude and it doesn’t bother me one bit.”

The rams already have two former Ramsey Jaguars teammates, quarterback Blake Bortles and edge Rusher Dante Fowler, in their locker room. McVeigh said he consulted with both and was pleased with what he heard.

“You want guys with some swag, some personality,” McVay said. “As long as these guys love football, they love competing every day, I think it’s a building that will suit him well.”
