WASHINGTON – the Late U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, one of the few Democrats leading the investigation into President Donald trump’s impeachment, will be honored at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday when the coffin with his remains will lie in state in the national Statue hall.

Cummings, 68, a civil rights champion and 22-year veteran of the House of representatives, died Thursday of complications from long-standing health problems.

The African-American Congressman will be honored in the “Statuary hall,” as is known among those working in the Capitol. For several decades in the 1800s, it served as the house chamber and was the site of debate over the nation’s slavery policy.

At the time of his death, Cummings, who represented the city of Baltimore and surrounding areas of Maryland, chaired the powerful house oversight and government reform Committee.

He became Chairman in January, when he and his fellow Democrats took control of the house of representatives.

From that post, Cummings led investigations into trump’s personal finances and possible abuses in Federal agencies.

In late September, House speaker Nancy Pelosi launched a formal impeachment investigation into trump’s relationship with Ukraine and appointed The house intelligence, foreign Affairs and oversight committees to lead the investigation.

Members of Congress will attend an official ceremony honoring Cummings anaiter hall, an ornate hall in the Capitol that holds statues from 50 U.S. States.
