Sheriff warns Loudoun residents That Money Card Fraud

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA.-as part of National crime prevention month, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office launched an at-band campaign this week aimed at warning County residents and businesses about the dangers of money card fraud.

As part of the campaign, Sheriff’s office employees will visit businesses where cash cards are sold to help employees identify potential victims of fraud. The Sheriff’s office also provides a flyer to be placed near areas where cash cards are sold to help inform residents of potential scammers. Flyers will also be distributed to senior living communities and senior centers in Loudoun County.

According to the Sheriff’s office, scammers often start with a simple phone call and usually follow the following scenario:

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said suspects often prey on a person’s fears by using the appearance of power and threatening arrest.

“We hope to stop these crimes before they happen by educating residents and ensuring businesses that sell cash cards are aware of the scammers,” Chapman said.

Residents are reminded:

Officials said law enforcement would never ask for money, and residents are encouraged to contact the loudoun Sheriff’s non-emergency number at 703-777-1021 to verify the caller claiming to be from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office.
