Rick Perry tells Trump he’s stepping down as energy Secretary

Washington-energy Secretary Rick Perry notified President trump on Thursday that he plans to resign, two administration sources familiar with the matter told CBS News. Perry, one of the oldest members of the President’s Cabinet, became embroiled in the Ukraine scandal engulfing the administration.

Perry told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that he sought out Mr. trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, this spring to address Mr. trump’s concerns about alleged corruption in Ukraine. The white house confirmed that the President urged Perry to work with Giuliani to investigate potential corruption in Ukraine.

Bloomberg News first reported that Perry had informed Mr. Trump of his intention to leave.

Perry, who was known for his colorful remarks in his previous life as Governor of Texas and as a presidential candidate, managed to mostly stay under the radar and out of negative headlines during his two-and-a-half years in office.

The exact date of Perry’s departure is not yet clear. But Perry’s departure is not entirely unexpected. Reports that Perry was planning his departure circulated for weeks.

It was not immediately clear who might be in control to replace Perry.
