Putin and Erdogan will discuss the situation in the North-East of Syria: Kremlin

“The situation in northeastern Syria is certainly tense because of this operation, and it will certainly be a very important topic on the agenda of next Tuesday’s talks in Sochi between presidents Putin and Erdogan,” Peskov told reporters.

“And, of course, as presidents always do, they use this meeting to” synchronize the clock” on topical issues of bilateral Russian-Turkish relations, ” Peskov added.

On October 9, Turkey and its allied Syrian rebel groups launched an operation to eliminate Kurdish forces in Northern Syria to end what Turkey perceives as the threat of “terrorist and separatist” groups on its southern border and introduce a safe zone for millions of Syrian refugee people housed by Turkey.

On Wednesday, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was ready to assist in cooperation between Damascus and Ankara on the basis of the 1998 Adana agreement between Turkey and Syria, under which Syria stopped supporting the Kurdistan Workers ‘ party (PKK) , seen as a terrorist party in Turkey.  ■
