More than 200 miles of roads in and around Paris are reported to be clogged with traffic Friday as a General strike, directed at the President of Emmanuel Macron plans to overhaul the country?s pension system continues to wreak havoc on commuters and tourists.

The second day in a row, subway station, surrounding the Eiffel tower and other attractions were closed, leaving visitors scrambling ways to get around one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

As of Friday morning, more than 217 miles of roads in and around Paris was snarled with traffic, the station adds. More than half of the 16 metro lines of the city remain closed and dozens of flights from major city airports canceled or delayed.

The government of Macron for several months negotiating with trade unions and other reforms, but would not divulge details of the proposed changes until next week. The government says it will keep the official retirement age of 62, but the plan is expected to encourage people to work longer.

The uncertainty of what this plan will entail, is fuelling public anxiety. Polls show most French people support the strike and protest movement, at least for now, in the hope that it pushes the government to pay more careful concerns of the workers.

Approximately seven out of 10 French workers are employed in the private sector, and strikes are carried out mainly in the public sector. But changes in retirement will affect everyone, and the demonstration was attended by workers of the private sector.

Commuters and parents struggling to get to work and school Friday had mixed feelings about the strikes and the reform.

“I understand that striking is a constitutional right, but there must be at least a partial (subway) service,” the World of Galeni told the Associated Press of how she tried to get her son to school in the Eastern part of Paris. “It’s really a disaster for people and politicians should do something, because we really had enough. One day, that’s fine, but I think it will last longer.?
