More pumps, power: RaceTrac wants to double the size of this palm beach County station

RaceTrac races doubles down at its new location in unincorporated Lantana.

The service station, convenience store chain wants to nearly double the size of its facility planned on the Northwest corner of Lantana and Haverhill roads. The zoning Board recently approved the project. The County commissioners have the final say at their meeting on October 24.

RaceTrac received approval six years ago to build a five-pump, 10-refueling service station with a 2,822-square-foot convenience store in this Central palm beach County location. But, instead, he wants to build a 5,414-square-foot store along with six pumps and 12 gas stations on the 1.78-acre site. RaceTrac plans to operate the facility 24 hours a day. It is expected to open in 2021 with an outdoor Seating area of 680 square feet and 30 Parking spaces.

Wawa has opened nine locations in palm beach County that include gas and store stops. RaceTrac has its own take on the gas station experience.

“A convenient gas store is no longer a place where you only get gas, but a place where you can fill your tank while you get high-quality freshly prepared food,” RaceTrac says in documents filed in the County. It claims that its competitors have changed the market for gas station development, “just as Amazon has changed retail.”

To be competitive (in palm beach County), RaceTrac needs “short gas lines with more pumps, and more store to prepare fresh meals and snacks.”

Two more Wawas will soon be built – one on the military trail and 45th street in West palm, and the other on the military trail and Lantana road, which is near the proposed RaceTrac site.

Meanwhile, a Cumberland Farms store recently opened in the region. Many of these facilities have as many as 16 gas stations and 6,000 feet of stores, all of which, according to RaceTrac, is in “stark contrast” to claims the company previously received for fewer gas pumps and a much smaller store.

In order to remain competitive, RaceTrac said it was revamping existing stores and developing new stores that offer more freshly prepared food, snacks and beverages along with better access to competitive gas prices. If the County approves the Lantana project, it will be the ninth RaceTrac service station in palm beach County.

In August, a spokesman for Murphy told the Post that he had taken a “demolition and restoration program” of his own in some of his high-end stores. Murphy service stations in lake Park and Delray beach are currently undergoing renovations to provide more pumps and larger stores.

The Lantana Raceway project received the support of two residents, who told the zoning Board that round-the-clock work would make the area safer.
