Meanwhile, a law has been introduced on Capitol Hill in Jackson that would allow bettors to use smartphones and computers to place sports bets anywhere in the state.
Jay McDaniel, executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, told Gambling. com that he had not been approached in the new year through other casino corporations except for the on-site cellular sports.
Mississippi is home to 26 state-regulated casinos, adding 12 along the Gulf Coast, adding 8 in the Biloxi area. Mississippi bettors can place in-person bets on sports betting at casinos.
One of two MGM Resorts mobile homes on site is Gold Strike Resort and Casino in Tunica, 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The other is Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi.
According to Mississippi law, legal cellular sports can only take a position if the user is somewhere on the casino grounds.
That could be replaced with a bill submitted earlier this month at the start of the legislative consultation. The consultation will run until April 3.
Under House Bill 184, sponsored by Rep. Cedric Burnett, D-Jackson, off-site cellular sports would be allowed statewide. The bill is pending action on the House Gaming and Ways and Means commissions, according to a Mississippi invoice tracking website.
“To those in Mississippi who wish to have it, I would say touch your state’s senator or representative and share your mind with them,” he said.
Mississippi borders one state where mobile sports are already taking up positions and two others that could have them soon.
Tennessee, which has no land-based casinos, introduced its mobile sports program in November 2022.
In Louisiana, sports were legalized over the summer with Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards signing gambling legislation.
The new sports betting law adds the use of smartphones and computers in the 55 of the 64 parishes that passed it in the 2020 state election.
After state regulators established regulations governing the industry, the first sports were held at an in-house ATM at a Louisiana casino on Oct. 31. Today, more than a dozen state-regulated casinos have sportsArray casinos.
Mobile sports are expected to begin in time for the NFL Super Bowl on Feb. 13, or even through the end of January.
In neighboring Arkansas, the state racing commission approved an update to the rule on Dec. 30 to allow mobile sports betting statewide.
A legislative panel reviewing proposed adjustments to state regulations is expected to vote on the cellphone soon, perhaps at its next meeting on Jan. 28.
If approved, mobile sports could begin in Arkansas until next month. Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he supports the mobile part because it would allow Arkansas to remain competitive with neighboring states that have it.
The superseded rule includes a provision that gives local casinos 51% of profits in partnership with national online bookmakers. Bookmakers have a percentage of 5 to 15%.
Arkansas is the first state to enshrine revenue-sharing percentages in a state rule. In states, percentages are calculated between bookmakers and their partner casinos.
