OCEANSIDE, Calif.-a swimmer and former marine who fatally stabbed a plumber in training at a construction site in Oceanside faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The sentencing date for Michael Schmidt, convicted last week of murdering Jacob Bravo in March 2017, is set for October 22, in which the defendant has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Schmidt’s conviction sparked the second phase of the trial, in which a jury determined late Monday that he was sane at the time of the killing, according to Deputy district attorney cal Logan.
Bravo was found with multiple stab wounds in a trailer at a site on Windward. Schmidt and the 37-year-old victim apparently did not know each other.
