The beach town of Makallapuram, where Prime Minister Narendra modi will meet Chinese President XI Jinping on October 10 and 11, has become a fortress ahead of informal talks between the two world leaders.
More than 5,000 police officers were deployed across Mamallapuram and a coast guard ship was deployed near the temple Shore. Modi and XI will take part in a cultural program near the temple, followed by a dinner.
India and China officially announced an informal summit on Wednesday after weeks of speculation. There were some irritations ahead of the meeting after China appeared to back Pakistan’s stance after India removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
The first informal summit between modi and XI took place in Wuhan last year in their first such meeting in Wuhan last year after a 73-day standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in Doklam in 2017.
In the last few days, Mamallapuram, a cultural heritage site, has already been declared outside the country for tourists.
Surfing and fishing along the Mamallapuram coast has been banned by police until this weekend’s summit.
Police have stepped up patrols and the city is being closely monitored by 800-plus CCTV cameras. The entry points to Mamallapuram are under 24×7 surveillance.
Last week, monuments were erected on which Prime Minister modi and XI visit over the next two days to be cleared. Barricades were set up along the beach near the temple on the shore. Shops along the beach will remain closed this weekend.
The welcome messages put on the city-regular Tamil, English, and Yes Chinese.
Chennai airport was decorated with flowers and banana leaves with the flags of India and China erected outside the premises.
President XI is expected to land at Chennai airport on Friday afternoon. Authorities have banned all flights from the airport 10 minutes before and after the Chinese President’s plane lands.
