Japan plans to postpone the Imperial parade due to the Typhoon, the media

Japan plans to postpone a major Imperial parade to mark the new Emperor’s ascension to the throne after nearly 80 people died in a devastating Typhoon, local media reported on Thursday.

The parade was scheduled for October 22 as part of a series of events marking the official proclamation of Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement. Religious ceremonies and an Imperial Banquet related to the event are still expected to continue, national broadcaster NHK said.

“The government has started to coordinate in the direction of postponing the festive parade, which was scheduled for October 22… to make sure they are doing everything they can to deal with the problems of Typhoon-affected areas, ” nhK said.

Contacted by AFP, the Imperial household Agency and the government Committee that organized the event declined to comment on the reports.

Naruhito officially succeeded his father Akihito in may, but a series of ceremonies and rites celebrating his enthronement are scheduled for this month and later this year, including a parade and an official enthronement ceremony originally scheduled for next Tuesday .

Japan is still conducting search and rescue operations after powerful Typhoon Hagibis hit the country on Saturday, causing devastating floods.

Nearly 80 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster, which has displaced many and caused extensive damage.
