The Israeli Air Force on Wednesday morning attacked several army sites belonging to Iran-backed teams in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border, following recent warnings from the Israeli military that it would act against Iran’s withdrawal from Syria and the smuggling of precision guided munitions from Iran.
Syria’s official news firm (SANA) showed that the attack, however, revealed the main points of the attacks.
“Military source: At 1:10 a. m. today, the Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike on the city of Deir al-Zour and the rule of al-Bukamal. The effects of the attack are being verified lately,” said a SANA report.
Citing a senior U. S. intelligence official wisely about the attack, the Associated Press reported that “the airstrikes were carried out with intelligence provided through the United States” and that “the attacks targeted a number of warehouses in Syria that were used in a pipeline to buy and level Iranian weapons.
According to Omar Abu Layla, ceo of Deir al-Zour 24, a German-based surveillance group, the “Aiyash Warehouses” airstrikes, which “are among the largest depots of Iranian defense forces in Syria because they involve tunnels and underground depots. “
The death and wounded has still been verified, but pro-Syrian activists have learned that a Syrian soldier from Masyaf was killed in the attack.
As reported in the past in the FDD’s Long War Journal, in recent weeks, the IDF has intensified its military operations in Syria in the form of airstrikes opposed to Syrian air defense sets and a cross of leaflets warning Syrian Arab army commanders not to help Hezbollah.
Wednesday’s attack is due to the location in the depths of Syrian territory, and it should be noted that the region is a well-known hub of Iranian army activity due to the Islamic Republic’s efforts to build a land bridge between Iran and the Mediterranean.
January 6 airstrikes on an air defense in southern Syria were probably the first step in a series of operations aimed at hindering the Syrian army’s ability to stumble upon Israeli aircraft that wear down Wednesday’s attacks.
Moreover, admission through a senior U. S. intelligence officer of Israel-U. S. coordination is a message to Iran that countries will react militarily opposing it.
Given the resurgence of Israel’s attacks and transparent warnings, the FDD’s Long War Journal estimates that the Israeli military is likely to continue its operations opposed to Iran and its power forces in Syria in the coming weeks.
