Biden’s comments sparked an uproar among Republicans on social media after the RNC posted a clip before the game where Biden noticed he was joking.

The president’s joke appeared to be a reference to Republican accusations that Biden’s circle of relatives sold state secrets and influence to Chinese entities in the Obama-Biden administration.

Last week, whistleblowers posted a text message showing Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, asking a Chinese businessman for cash while mentioning his father.

“I am sitting here with my father and I would like to understand why the commitment that was made has not been fulfilled,” he wrote to the businessman in 2017. “I’ll make sure that between the guy sitting next to me and all his acquaintances and my ability to hold grudges, you don’t follow my instructions. In a statement, Hunter Biden blamed the threatening message on his client’s “horrible addiction” at the time.
