The already contentious issue has escalated over the fact that US President Donald trump reportedly plans to ask South Korea to pay more for the presence of us troops in the country. The us armed forces protected the South Koreans from attacks that could be carried out in the North or elsewhere, the us explained its reasoning. Japan, where more U.S. troops are based than South Korea, is also expected to be asked to pay.
In February, according to the Japan Times, South Korea and the United States signed a temporary agreement that resulted in Seoul’s contribution to the U.S. defense ranging from $830 million to $924 million a year. The new increase is much larger, however, with the trump administration reportedly planning to charge a total of $ 4.8 billion – five times what it is currently paying.
If you look at the level of troops in Korea and Japan, then, for some time for Japan, the country will be paid from 8 to 20 billion dollars a year. According to UPI, Japan paid $4.4 billion to the United States in 2017.
This chart shows the number of U.S. troops in Korea and Japan, as well as current and potential future contributions to the U.S. armed forces.
