President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration is just days away, and most, if not all, of the musical artists participating in the events taking place this Friday have already been announced through the new president’s committee. So far, names like 3 Doors Down, Tothrough Keith, Big & Rich, Jackie Evancho, members of the Rockettes and a few others have signed up to participate in the force transition celebration.
For comparison, when Barack Obama was sworn in on the same day in 2009, the musical entertainment was provided by Aretha Franklin, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Gabriela Montero and Anthony McGill, the United States Marine Band and both the San Francisco Boys Chorus and Girls Choruses. During his second public inauguration, President Obama brought out Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, in addition to musical performances by a band comprised of members of the armed forces.
At the numerous inaugural balls on the night of her first swearing-in, Beyoncé, Jay Z, James Taylor and The Dead (which includes members of The Grateful Dead) were just a few of the performers who led the crowd. Four years later, the line-up was even more impressive, with occasions that night in 2013 featuring performances by superstars such as Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Fun. , cast members of the TV show GleeArray John Legend, Maná, Smokey Robinson. Array Soundgarden and Stevie Wonder, to name just the group’s greatest highlights.
One of the biggest stories surrounding Donald Trump’s transition from candidate to President of the United States has been his team’s apparent inability to secure top-tier talent for the inaugural events. A number of highly successful artists such as Elton John, David Foster, U.K. superstars Charlotte Church and Rebecca Ferguson, Moby, 2 Chainz, The Beach Boys and Ice-T have publicly stated that they were asked but declined, while there have been reports that Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli and Kiss were all asked, but that they decided not to get involved for one reason or another.
