Great Blakenham SnOasis: finances ‘in place’ for 300m centre

Plans for SnOasis in great Blakenham, near Ipswich, have been in the pipeline for 18 years, with a planning consent plan agreed more than a decade ago.

The report, compiled by Mid Suffolk district Council staff, will be presented to the planning Committee on 13 March.

The 123-hectare (304-acre) complex could open by the end of 2023, it said.

Under the plans, the site will host an indoor snow shelter facility featuring ski slopes, a bobsled run and an ice wall.

The complex will also include a bowling alley, nightclub, casino, cinema, rock climbing and food court.

It is also planned to build a hotel and shops for the former quarry, as well as a skating track and a sports Academy.

It is hoped that winter sports athletes will be based on the training ground.

The planning Committee will be asked to give the acting chief planning officer the power to approve the final details, known as reserved questions.

This represents “an important step forward in the life of this long-standing project,” the report said.

He adds: “Officers understand that financial support is available and that it is intended if reserved approval issues are provided in accordance with the recommendations of the present to have the entire facility capable of operation by the end of 2023.”

The eight stages of reserved questions include the final details of the complex, Parking, ecology and structural landscape.

Developer Godfrey Spanner has previously said the “unique winter sports resort and facility” will provide “significant local, regional and national benefits.”

Planning permission was granted in 2008, but the project was delayed due to ” recession and environmental issues.”

Previous plans for the railway station were cancelled.
