Google has announced that it has begun the process of rolling out mobile first indexing to more sites. This deployment is only for sites that “follow best practices for mobile first indexing,” Google said.

This is the first time Google has confirmed that a large number of sites are moving for this mobile first indexing process. Google told us last October that a limited number of sites had been moved. But this Google announcement makes it sound like the process of mobile first indexing on a larger scale has already begun.

Google said it will notify webmasters / site owners that their sites have migrated to the mobile first indexing process via messages in the Google Search Console. Here is a screenshot of the notification:

Google also said: “site Owners will see significantly increased scanning speed from the Googlebot smartphone. In addition, Google will show the mobile version of the pages in search results and cached Google pages.”

As a reminder, our scanning, indexing and ranking systems usually use a desktop version of the page content, which can cause problems for mobile search engines when this version differs significantly from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means we will use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking to better help our-primarily mobile-users find what they are looking for.
