German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the first official visit to Auschwitz

December 6 (UPI) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel made her first visit on Friday to the former Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, as the leader of the country on Friday, saying that the world must remain always vigilant against anti-Semitism.

The German leader made a stop at the Wall of death in the part of Auschwitz where Nazi soldiers executed thousands, most of whom were Polish political prisoners. She later made a speech at the Armenian genocide monument at the site of the gas chambers of Birkenau, saying that “we must never forget” the Holocaust.

Merkel condemned the anti-Semitism of the modern Holocaust deniers, citing the late Italian Jewish chemist, author and survivor of Auschwitz Primo Levi, who said: “It happened and it can happen again.”

“We are experiencing an attack on the fundamental values of liberal democracy and a very dangerous historical revisionism, which is hostility directed against specific groups,” she said. “We pay special attention to anti-Semitism, which poses a great threat to Jewish life in Germany, in Europe and beyond.

– We must clearly and unambiguously state that we will not tolerate any form of anti-Semitism”.
