FCC votes to approve T-Mobile-Sprint merger

Today, the FCC officially approved the disputed t-Mobile and Sprint merger, the Vergereports. But the commissioners are still speaking. Commissioners Jessica Rosenworcel and Jeffrey Starks published a statement in which he explained his decision to vote against the deal.

In his statement, Rosenworcel said:

“We’ve all seen what happens when markets become more concentrated after a merger like this one. In the aviation industry, it has brought us baggage fees and small seats. In the pharmaceutical industry, this has led several pharmaceutical companies to raise the prices of life-saving drugs. There is no reason to think that this time it will be different.”

She detailed her reasons for opposing the deal in a review for the Atlantic this morning. In a separate statement, Commissioner Starks expresses similar sentiments.

We’re still waiting for confirmation from the FCC, but it looks like the deal is moving forward. While normally a deal with the FCC and DOJ approval would be allowed to close, there’s a chance a lawsuit filed by attorneys General could still block the merger.
