WASHINGTON-Rep. Elijah Cummins will lie in state next Thursday in the Statuary hall after dying early Thursday, house speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday.
The Capitol hill giant has died at the age of 68 after ” complications related to long-standing health problems.”
An official memorial service for Cummings, who has represented Maryland in the House of representatives since 1996, for members of Congress, family members and special guests. It will be followed by a public viewing.
The funeral will be held on October 25 at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, the Baltimore Sun reports. Cummings worshipped there for decades.

Cummings has spoken openly about civil rights and voter access, is a passionate mrope of democratic politics and a fierce critic of the trump administration. But he was also noted for his fair and respectful treatment of his fellow Republicans.
He was the son of real estate investors, who at one time became a lawyer, judge and Congressman. He was a former Chairman of the congressional Black Caucus and is currently serving as Chairman of the House oversight and reform Committee, playing a Central figure in the House ongoing impeachment investigation of President Donald trump.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that “In the house, Elijah was our Northern star. He was a leader of lofty character and integrity whose stirring voice and enduring values pushed Congress and the country to rise always to the highest goal.”
It is an honor to lie in the state or an honor in the Capitol. Others who have also received the honor include the late President George H. W. Bush and Senator John McCain.
