Dutch family found in remote farmhouse may have been “moons,” suspect to be held for 14 days – Fox News

A family found living largely isolated from the outside world on a farm in the Netherlands for nearly a decade may have been linked to a South Korean-based Unification Church, also known as the” Moonies, ” Dutch media reported Thursday.

The Prosecutor’s office said on Twitter that the 58-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is suspected of involvement in “deprivation of liberty and causing harm to others.” The man, widely reported in the Dutch media to be an Austrian citizen identified only as Jozef B., was ordered by a judge Thursday to be detained for another two weeks while the investigation into the matter continues.

The family and the 58-year-old are believed to have been linked to the Unification Church, RTV Drenthe reported.

The family became involved in a religious cult known for mass weddings when the father moved to the Netherlands and lived off donations that allowed them to live on a farm for nearly a decade in isolation, according to the broadcaster.

A cousin of the alleged Joseph B. told De Telegraaf that the family was thrown out of the cult about 30 years ago.

“There was a lot of disagreement between my parents and my uncle, and between my uncle and the Church Association,” he told the newspaper. “At one point, he ran away angry.”

The unification Church was founded in 1954 by sun Myung moon, a self-proclaimed Messiah who believed he was chosen by Jesus Christ to continue the work of establishing perfect peace and harmony, Reuters reported.

Before his death in 2012, moon oversaw mass weddings in which thousands of people were matched with spouses they sometimes met, and in some cases did not even speak the same language. The group’s followers were often called “Moonies” by critics, who raised questions about how it inspired members, according to Reuters. In the early 1990s, the group is believed to have as many as 7 million followers in 180 countries.

The organization was banned in Germany and other European countries in the 1990s because it was seen as a dangerous religious sect, reports DutchNews.nl.

Among the “moon” rituals on a farm in the Netherlands had to do were to walk in a circle every 30 minutes, according to RTV Drenthe. After the family was initially taken off the farm on Monday, family members continued to walk outside on their knees every 30 minutes.

Passersby saw the strange behavior and began taking pictures, prompting Dutch authorities to relocate the family, the broadcaster reported.

FAMILY OF 7 FOUND LIVING IN DUTCH FARM BASEMENT FOR YEARS WAITING FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

Six family members, reportedly a father and children aged 18-25, were found this week living in what local mayor Roger de Groot called “makeshift rooms” on a farm in rural areas to the East.

The family’s father reportedly had a cerebral infection three years ago that paralyzed him, allowing the family to continue receiving money from the organization. A large amount of cash was found on the farm, RTV Drenthe reported.

They were discovered after a 25-year-old man left the farm, visited a local bar and raised the alarm. Dutch media reported Wednesday that the young man, Jan Sohn van Dorsten, has been active in recent weeks on social media, including saying he worked for a company run by a suspect who is to be charged.

Pictures of the farm show a group of buildings with a large vegetable garden on one side. The small property appears to be ringed by a fence and largely hidden by trees.

While Dutch media reported that the family lived on the farm allegedly “waiting for the end of time,” officials did not release any further details. The Drenthe police Department said a large-scale investigation team is currently working on the farm and investigators are probing possible criminal charges, according to police.

“We understand that everyone still has many questions. We have that too. So we want to do our research carefully and thoroughly, ” police said.
