Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President-elect Donald Trump held their first phone calls in four years on Friday.
According to Trump, he spoke with XI about Tiktok, hours before the Supreme Court ratified a law to prohibit the social networks platform in the United States in less than 48 hours.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform: “I hope we solve a lot of disruption together and immediately. “
“We have discussed the balance of commerce, fentanil, the Tiktok and many other issues. President XI and I will do everything possible so that the world is more violent and safe!”
On Friday, the call between Trump and XI occurred just before the Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Friday on a federal law that prohibited Tiktok unless its parent company founded in China, Bytedance, does not sell the Sunday application. The judges have decided that the links of the application with China pose important dangers for national security, which prevails over considerations on the freedom of expression of Tiktok and its 170 million US users.
A Tiktok sale doesn’t seem imminent. While existing users will retain access to the app after the law went into effect on January 19, new downloads will be banned and updates will be paused to become available. The Ministry of Justice noted in court documents that this would ultimately render the application inoperable.
The resolution marks an escalation in US efforts to respond to security disruptions related to foreign-owned technology platforms.
The call also comes amid claims by the Chinese government that it “forced” the expansion of nuclear weapons, as did a U. S. official who issued a warning about China’s weapons of mass destruction program.
State television China Central Television (CCTV) showed that the verbal exchange between Trump and Xi took place “on the night of January 17,” and other main points of the discussion were not provided without delay.
During his first term, Trump took a hardline stance against China, launching a protracted trade war that imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese imports and reshaped economic relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump has threatened to slap 60% of the price lists on all Chinese imports to the United States, however, he has also praised his appointment with XI and has reported that China can mediate foreign crises such as the war in Ukraine.
The phone call marks a remarkable moment of commitment between the two leaders.
Trump said in a December interview on Meet the Press that he has been communicating with Xi since he won the election. In the interview, Trump said he had “a very smart relationship” with China’s leader. He said they did not talk about Taiwan yet.
CCTV said in a press release: “We are in a position to dialogue and communicate with the new U. S. administration, properly manage disputes, expand mutually favorable cooperation, and jointly promote a stable, healthy and lasting progression of China-U. S. relations. “
“China has noticed and developed relations between China and the United States according to the principles of mutual respect, non -violent coexistence and mutual benefit cooperation. “
Beijing announced previously on the day that Xi would send Vice President Han Zheng to establish China at Trump’s inauguration on Monday, January 20.
