AUSTIN, Texas-colony Park welcomes the district’s first-ever mobile marketplace, which opened last Friday.
The market will sell affordable, fresh local and Texas products every Friday near The Central health mobile clinic located in Barbara Jordan elementary. Farmshare Austin is expanding its fresh for less mobile markets to 14 locations in the 2019-20 market season, including colony Park-the community does not have access to healthy food. The nearest full-service grocery store is 2.5 km from Highway 183.
The market will sell fresh Texas produce, local eggs, local honey, and healthy foods from 2:00 p.m. to 4: 00 p.m. every Friday. The new mobile marketplace will be located at Barbara Jordan elementary school located at 6711 johnny Morris Rd. the nearby mobile health clinic is operated by CommUnityCare medical centers (open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8: 30am-4pm), and is occupied by metro bus stop 233 on the northeast feed.
“We are working to bridge the gap to immediately meet the needs of healthy eating in the community,” Farmshare Austin food access Director Heather Helman said in a prepared statement. “Mobile markets meet families where they live, work, go to school or seek medical care, leading to a one-stop shop towards improving public health.”
The mobile marketplace accepts Lone Star SNAP, cash, credit and debit cards, and Sustainable food center double dollars, part of the Double Up Food Bucks program. Customers who pay with their Lone Star SNAP benefits can receive up to $ 30 in matching Double dollars to purchase additional fruits and vegetables.
“With one of the highest rates of mortality, morbidity and chronic disease in Travis County, and the lack of a major grocery store to provide quality fresh food, we are very pleased that Farmshare has decided to bring its newest location to the colony Park area,” Barbara Scott, President of the colony Park neighborhood Association said in a prepared statement.
The mobile Farmshare Austin market in colony Park is made possible by a contract with Austin Public health and the city of Austin. The city of Austin Fresh for less initiative provides fresh, local, high-quality products at an affordable price in numerous locations throughout the city.
