The Chinese government opened its country’s doors a little wider this week by extending the period in which tourists visiting the country can remain visa-free for up to ten days.

It is China’s latest effort to welcome tourists amid geopolitical tensions and after strict pandemic policies put the entire country on ice. The transit policy is one of the few adjustments China has made to attract visitors since reopening its borders in 2023.

The Chinese government said in a statement that it “invites more foreign friends to come to China and delight in the country’s good looks in this new era. “

Here’s what you need to know.

As of 2023, China allowed travelers from 54 other countries, in addition to the United States, to enter the country without a prior visa if they were in transit to the country.

First, tourists were allowed to stay between three and six days, depending on the port of access they used. Under the new policy, tourists can stay awake for 240 hours, or 10 days, if they arrive at one of the country’s licensed airports.

China also added 21 sites to its 39 ports of entry and exit and eased restrictions in all provinces. Previously, travelers were limited to the fast region through which they entered the country. But in its updated policy, China will allow other people to enter through the transit program through the 24 provinces where people without visas are allowed.
