San Jose-the Great health club is now offered at the San Jose site on South Winchester Boulevard, where an old domed movie theater once stood and screened Hollywood blockbusters and other films of bygone decades.
The proposal calls for a 38,000 square foot health club, San Jose city files show.
Syufy Enterprises owns the lots where the health club will be developed, according to Santa Clara County property documents.
San Rafael-based Syufy operates several businesses, including SyWest development, a commercial real estate firm; and the Villasport Sports club
“Syufy is doing very well with its VillaSport concept,” said James Chang, retail specialist and Executive managing Director of Cushman
Founded in 1941, Syufy has operated movie theaters in the Bay Area and elsewhere for decades. These movie palaces, in particular, included the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th domed theaters in San Jose.
Eventually, Sufi began working under the name theatres of the Century. In 2006, Cinemark bought Century Theaters, a deal that included the sale of the Century 21, 22 and 23 theater, also located along Winchester Boulevard in San Jose.
The only domed theater that Sufi retained after the 2006 sale to Cinemark was Century 24. The first film on screen in the 24th century was the screening of gone with the wind in 1968. Century 24 closed its doors in 2014.
One of the domed theaters that will survive extensive efforts to create a dramatic and modern new technology campus on Winchester Boulevard, which is called the Santana West century 21 film center, which is now preserved as a historic structure.
Syufy owns nearly three acres on the century 24 site, County documents show.
The proposal provides for a two-story health club 741 S. Winchester Boulevard.
Potential rivals have either opened their doors in the immediate vicinity or are seeking approval for fitness center sites.
Barry’s Bootcamp, a boutique fitness center with a personal touch, has rented a site in the bustling Santana row complex in San Jose.
The technology campus, which will include a 250,000-square-foot office building and a 140,000-square-foot fitness center is currently being considered at the old garden city Casino site at Stevens Creek Boulevard and Saratoga Avenue, city planning documents show.
Despite potential competition, a large office complex being built on the corner of south Winchester Boulevard and Olsen Drive, along with a huge new Outpost in Santana row for tech upstart Splunk, could boost demand for fitness centers from tech Workers.
This fitness complex featured a gym, restaurants, kindergarten, pools and water slides, as well as a choice of classes and a basketball court with hardwood floors.
