iOS 13 continues Apple’s impressive pace of installing the new version of the iPhones operating system. Launched on September 19, the mobile OS is now installed on half of all iPhones, and 55 percent of iPhones launched last year. As for Android, Google hasn’t updated its android dashboard since may 2019, so we don’t have numbers for Android 10, but I wouldn’t expect Android 10 to be anywhere near the iOS 13s fifty percent mark. Mays numbers pegged Android 9 at 10.4 percent about nine months after its public launch.

This may not be a fair comparison due to the different business models, but it highlights the success of Apples in maintaining control of its own smaller system so that it can distribute updates directly to the iPhone user base. Once Google updates Android it has to roll out for each manufacturer, then each manufacturer has to apply their own customizations and UI changes, roll them out internally for all their SKUs, then check each carrier option, and then start rolling them out along with the carrier deployment.
Counter that Androids monthly updates that include bug fixes and security patches for devices that keep devices safe and bug free, but that doesn’t include major updates for the OS itself.
Apple has a much easier time. There are far fewer iPhone options and everyone is turning to the same uI. And with direct communication with each owner, the deployment has far less digital lag in the supply chain.
That’s why Apple can hit more than half of recent iPhone purchases with the new OS, which helps a lot when dealing with some important issues like ioOS 13 being rolled out (five updates and counting as of publication), so its not been easy sailing.
But Theres going to be a happy team in Cupertino looking at those numbers.
