The two leaders will meet in the black sea resort of Sochi on October 22, Erdogan’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. She gave no other details.   

Putin invited Erdogan “on a working visit in the coming days,” the Russian leader’s office said Tuesday. “The invitation was accepted,” he added.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, meanwhile denied suggestions that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would join the Russian and Turkish leaders for trilateral talks. Russia is Syria’s main military backer.

Last week, us President Donald trump abruptly announced the withdrawal of us troops from the northeastern region of Syria, clearing the way for Turkey’s cross-border military campaign. 

Turkey’s offensive, now in its eighth day, aims to push Kurdish forces out of the border area and create a “safe zone” for the return of Syrian refugees. 

Ankara sees the Syrian Kurdish fighters as “terrorists” associated with Kurdish separatists on its territory.

After the U.S. withdrawal, the Kurdish-led Syrian democratic forces (SDF) are unlikely to have allied with the Syrian government, which has since sent troops to the border region. 

Russia and Iran are staunch allies of the Syrian government, and Moscow quickly filled the void created by the U.S. withdrawal by deploying its armed forces as a buffer as Syrian government forces moved North as part of a deal with Syrian Kurdish forces.
