Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said he could see the NBA adding a third round pick to his draft.

Kentucky coach John Calipari hates the idea.

Calipari, via Alex Scarborough of ESPN:

? If someone supports more rounds in the draft, those more rounds to let kids go to the g League, you don’t care about College basketball or you?re trying to ruin College basketball,? Calipari said.

? After two years they don’t perform what? Is the NBA going to take care of them and hire them? No. This entertainment. Are you done? Calipari said.

? If they’re not going to the NBA, if we are?re really about young people, we should encourage them to go to College,? he said. ? And the reason is that their way out is through education. Their way to break through to the American dream is education.?

The most overlooked and most important aspect of this debate: the project is an anti-labor mechanism.

Of course, players dress up and celebrate getting picked up. They treat it as an honor.

But the draft serves to limit players and give power to teams.

Players can only sign with one NBA team. Can they? Freshmen must follow a strict wage scale that limits wages well below market value.

I estimate about 90% of first round picks would get better contracts as undrafted free agents. The proof is in the NBA? repeated willingness to pay rookie scale.

It is a myth that in the first round you can get a guaranteed salary. In the case of signing, they receive two years of guaranteed salary. But the editorial team should not offer a contract at all.

However, almost every team tends to pay in the first round, which the scale dictates. In rare cases, the team is not?t, it’s easy enough to find another team that and trade pick up.

Only once has a team ever given up on the first round rather than trying to sign him. The bulls did with No. 29 pick Travis knight in 1996.

If teams could pay more to provide to secure a first-round caliber player, it goes without saying they often will. But they shouldn’t bet against each other.

Anti player effects exclusive rights also extend the second round. It’s a more overcast picture out there because so many teams draft someone in the second round dependent on him agreeing to contract terms in advance. Thus, the second round of the class players get more power over the process. However, the threat always looms of getting drafted by an unwanted team and being forced to negotiate only with that team. This will push some second-round prospects into a less-than-ideal, but not worst-case scenario, arrangements.

There’s always more flexibility with going undrafted. In addition to the anchoring effect of teams in favor of the players they have drafted, there are also more lucrative contracts with the undrafted team.

So the third round will be seen as more of an opportunity. Players love getting drafted, and another 30 players will get drafted. But there is? The regular number of NBA regular season players is still limited to 15 standard contracts and two two-way contracts.

There?d just more players facing restrictions on exclusive negotiating rights.

The players ‘ Union must not agree to more than two rounds without receiving concessions in return.

Like the NBA?s minor League expands for each team having its own affiliate, I represent NBA teams holding NBA rights to their minor leaguers. Currently, players signed to minor League contracts are NBA free agents. The only way to get players to agree to give up their freedom in this way is with the higher minor League salaries that I believe are coming.

The best way to stock up on these minor League affiliates might be through a more nbai project.

At this point, teams can decide how long to invest in these fringed players. Maybe it will be two years. Maybe it will be longer. I doubt there will be a hard and fast rule.

College basketball eligibility comes with a four-year restriction.

We have to treat basketball as sacred. The NCAA is a cartel that caps players? Compensations. Maybe that will change. But until that happens, major College sports are ruining themselves while coaches and administrators save money for themselves.

If the NBA is developing a minor League and longer draft system that appeals to players, what?d to be large. Elite prospects deserve better options.
