WASHINGTON – Louisiana Senators helped defeat an attempt to prevent President Donald Trump from using money earmarked for military construction projects to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy, R-Madisonville, voted Thursday against overturning trump’s recent veto, and U.S. Sen. bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, was among the 11 members who did not vote.

An attempt to override the President, which requires the support of two-thirds of senators, failed 53-36. It took him 67 to get through.

Trump issued an emergency statement earlier this year, citing an influx of migrants at the border that allowed the White house to withdraw funding from military construction projects at bases across the country, including two projects at the Belle Chasse military base totaling nearly $ 40 million, and redirect that money to a wall along the southern border.

The house and Senate both voted last month to block the President’s emergency Executive order. Kennedy and Cassidy also sided with trump in the previous vote.

Cassidy said he received assurances the Louisiana military base would eventually receive the money needed for planned upgrades to “alert facilities” and jet Parking for the marine forces Northern command located there.

The naval air station Joint reserve base is Louisiana’s only Location on the list of $ 1 billion in planned military construction timelines in States across the country. Another $ 2.6 billion is diverted from military projects in the United States and other countries.

The money diverted from Louisiana was one of several projects that U.S. Sen. Mike Udall, D-new Mexico, cited Thursday in favor of redefining.

“In Louisiana, the Air national guard sought to replace the aircraft Parking ramp at A new Orleans facility that exposes the public to an ‘unacceptable risk’ of being affected by an explosive accident, ” he said.
