NUCLEAR MISSILE SYSTEM EXPLOSION IN RUSSIA KILLS 2 WORKERS FROM RADIATION SICKNESS, REPORT SAYS
The port city of Severodvinsk is located near the military training ground in Nyonoks, in the far Northern Arkhangelsk region of the country.
On August 8, five nuclear workers were killed during a rocket engine test near the White sea in an area considered part of the test site. The Russian defense Ministry initially said the blast killed two people and injured six, but the state nuclear Agency Rosatom later reported that five of its employees were killed and three others were injured. Rosatom said the explosion occurred during a test by engineers of a” nuclear isotope energy source ” for the missile and was thrown into the sea as a result of the explosion.
Later, a Russian newspaper reported that two patients injured in the explosion died of radiation sickness, after which they could be taken to Moscow for treatment.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said radiation levels did not reach dangerous levels after the explosion; national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.
Weeks later, the meteorological Agency reported that radioactive isotopes had been detected in the test samples.
